Latin Minor

Latin Minor

Students who love Latin and continue to the third or fourth year of the language can easily add a Latin minor. It complements majors in history, English, philosophy and political science.

Curriculum

The Latin minor is a 16-credit hour program focused on developing advanced proficiency in Latin language and literature, while also exploring the broader cultural and historical context of the classical world. After completing Latin through the intermediate level (LAT 2120 or equivalent), students take at least 6 credit hours of upper-level Latin courses, such as Latin Prose and Poetry or Advanced Latin Literature.

An additional 6 credit hours are chosen from a wide range of Classical Civilization courses covering topics like archaeology, mythology, Roman history, and ancient religion. Students also complete a 1-credit Colloquium in Classics and Religious Studies, and finish the minor with 3 elective credits from approved Latin, Greek, or related classics courses.

Career Opportunities

A Latin minor can provide graduates with the tools to analyze language, write more precisely in English, and apply skills in research, analysis and critical thinking, and familiarity with humanities to many jobs. For programs in education, archaeology, ancient and medieval history, philosophy, law and theology, an advanced knowledge of Latin is extremely useful.
