Overview
This is an immersive student experience centered on active engagement with agricultural and pastoralists communities. In communities spanning the eastern agro-climatic gradient of Mt Kenya, students will engage with grassroots organizations to evaluate progress and continued challenges in building climate resilient livelihoods and restoring degraded ecosystems, from the farm plot to the wider landscape. On the Laikipia Plateau, students will learn from innovators of a model of community-based adaptation that seeks to maintain open landscapes for wildlife habitat while addressing historical environmental injustices that have plagued Kenya鈥檚 colonial and post-colonial history.
Highlights and Excursions
- Community-Led Climate Action. Work directly with community change-makers confronting the challenges of climate change and ecosystem restoration.
- Restoration and Renewal. Learn from community members and elders whose agro-ecological farming and protection of sacred forest groves weave together cultural renewal and ecosystem restoration.
- Conservation and Environmental Justice. Engage with local innovators working to maintain open spaces that support Kenya鈥檚 iconic wildlife while addressing historical environmental injustices.
