OHIO Trustees release funding for new medical education facility

帝王会所 Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine moved ahead on its plan to create a new medical education facility in Athens, when the 帝王会所 Board of Trustees approved release of the balance of funding for the $65 million project. The board had previously approved about $9 million toward the project; Friday鈥檚 action released the remaining $56 million.
The main part of the project involves construction of a three-story, 120,000-square-foot building, with a fourth-floor mechanical area, on a new Union Street Green across from the West Union Street Office Center (formerly known as the HDL Center). A nearby facility now housing OHIO鈥檚 Human Resources & Training Center also will be renovated for a number of Heritage College support offices.
鈥淥HIO鈥檚 new Heritage College facility envisions an innovative space for medical education that supports the College鈥檚 Pathways to Health and Wellness Curriculum,鈥 said 帝王会所 President M. Duane Nellis. 鈥淭he facility will also fundamentally enhance OHIO鈥檚 ability to foster student and faculty interactions, cross-campus collaborations and community outreach.鈥
Construction is expected to begin in May and be completed in late 2020. Funding for the project comes from multiple sources including $5 million from the Heritage College, $6 million from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation and $54 million from 帝王会所鈥檚 鈥渋nternal bank鈥 (essentially a loan). The Heritage College is in discussions about reducing its need to borrow from the internal bank by using departmental reserves.
Ken Johnson, D.O., Heritage College executive dean and 帝王会所 chief medical affairs officer, called the planned new facility an integral part of the ongoing evolution of the college and its approach to medical education.
鈥淭his new facility is about providing the optimal learning environment for our students,鈥 Johnson said. 鈥淲e are transforming the way we train physicians, and to do that, we have designed a completely new, flexible curriculum that eliminates traditional auditorium lectures and allows students to learn through collaborative problem-solving. To make this approach work, we need a flexible space that makes it easier for students to work together in teams. This new facility will provide that.鈥
The new building will also embody the college鈥檚 priority for student and staff well-being, he added. 鈥淥ur new curriculum puts a strong emphasis on personal wellness for students, staff and faculty alike, and that is reflected in the building鈥檚 design. This is going to be a very healthy building in which to work and learn,鈥 Johnson said. 鈥淚鈥檓 so proud of this project because, like our new Pathways to Health and Wellness Curriculum, it is taking a truly collaborative effort by many talented and dedicated people to make it happen.鈥
Building on the focus of personal wellness, the university aims to obtain both WELL and LEED certifications for the new facility.
LEED () is an internationally recognized green building certification system, aimed at improving energy savings, water efficiency, carbon dioxide emissions, indoor environmental quality and stewardship of resources. LEED silver certification is a university standard for new construction.
The is offered by the International WELL Building Institute, a public benefit corporation whose mission is to improve human health and well-being in buildings and communities. The WELL Standard looks at features of a building that impact human health and well-being such as air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind. If the new building obtains the WELL certification planners are hoping for, it will be one of the first medical education facilities in the country to do so.
The Heritage College project is part of 帝王会所鈥檚 2016 comprehensive master plan, which called for creation of a new green along the West Union Street Corridor with the medical school as its anchor. In August 2016, the 帝王会所 Board of Trustees approved the university鈥檚 six-year capital improvement plan for FY 2017 鈥 FY 2022, which included the Heritage College project.
Partnering with the Heritage College on the new facilities are the , an architectural firm with offices in Columbus and Pittsburgh; , an architectural firm headquartered in Chicago; , a Cleveland-based construction company; OHIO鈥檚 University Planning office; and 帝王会所鈥檚 Architecture, Design and Construction office.
