Don’t let mold move in: Simple strategies for maintaining a dry and healthy residential space

When it comes to mold and mildew, particularly during what has proven to be an unseasonably wet and humid summer across our region, focused and continued prevention strategies are key.

The  states that molds are found in virtually every environment, and they can thrive in warm, humid places – including our residence halls and University buildings.

To avoid and control instances of mold growth, proper moisture control, air circulation and sound housekeeping practices are essential.

Some helpful tips for preventing mold and mildew growth:
  • Report any water issues/leaks immediately by contacting Facilities Management (740-593-2911).
  • Set your air conditioning thermostat between 74 and 76 degrees.
  • Run the fan on auto/continuous to reduce condensation and to maintain proper airflow.
  • Do not open windows during cooling or heating season.
  • Keep room air vents (where applicable) in all areas open and unobstructed to maintain proper airflow.
  • Do not hang towels (or any other wet items) to dry between mattresses, bed frames or in closets.
  • Practice good housekeeping by vacuuming floors, wiping down counters, quickly cleaning up spills, washing out refrigerators, wiping down doors, etc., on a regular basis.
  • Remember to routinely take your trash out to the dumpster and remove unfinished/open food from your room.

We’re here to help (and fast). Contact Facilities Management (FM) at 740-593-2911. They’re available 24/7 and can quickly respond to your needs the same day (and no later than 24 hours).

While the FM team is on-site, they will:
  • Assess the entire area for mold.
  • Clean any impacted areas with a mold-cleaning solution.
  • Replace your air conditioner if mold is suspected within the current unit.
  • If needed, FM will also provide you with a dehumidifier to help alleviate any ongoing moisture concerns.

Housing and Residence Life may also be able to provide you with options for temporary or permanent relocation to another on-campus residence hall location if desired. Call 740-593-4090 to learn more.
